To answer the latter - I was a bit of a “poser” at the time (in the sense that I wanted a cool-looking record but had no intentions of playing it), but do I really consider coloured vinyl to be a gimmick? In some ways maybe, but I feel there are too many negative connotations that come with such a label. Does it sound better on vinyl? Will the pink enhance the sound? Am I a poser engaging in an over-hyped gimmick? Look! I have fluorescent pink vinyl of Wolf!īut then I was hit with the dreaded question: “does it sound better on vinyl?”Ĭonsidering I didn't have a record player with a working needle or a plastic five pound note at the time, I didn’t really have an answer for them. It was a statement piece - something to brag to my friends about. I remember thinking that, aesthetically, this was the coolest thing I had ever owned. The photos weren’t lying: it really was pink. I opened up the sleeves and pulled the discs out, along with a CD copy of the album and a large sticker of Tyler’s face (which I still intend to use, by the way).

So, after minimal internal debate, I spent some birthday and/or Christmas money on it and the record arrived a few days later.

It was also my favourite album at the time which definitely helped the decision-making process. I hadn’t really considered collecting vinyl before, but I was playing the album digitally on a daily basis and the allure of having a physical, visually appealing form of it which I could tangibly hold was too great to pass up on. I remember the first record I ever purchased: Tyler, the Creator’s Wolf - a fluorescent pink vinyl that was calling my name before I ever even owned a record player.
